With the iPhone’s photography abilities, each one of us can become a full-featured photographer. There’s a very large amount of 3rd party photography gear which is iPhone compatible and which can be used to take great photos. Those are mostly additional lenses, stands, and tripods which are all valuable pieces of equipment when it comes to exploring iPhone’s photography.
With each new iPhone generation, the camera also got improvements, so the iPhone 5 now comes with pretty amazing 8-megapixel camera and ability to shoot HD videos (1080p). Some other built-in features are autofocus, panorama mode, video stabilization, geotagging, and more. This means that you can use your iPhone 5 as a very serious digital camera. This also corresponds with the amount of third party photography gear which became increasingly popular once iPhone 4 became available, and today you can choose from hundreds of high-quality stands, lenses, and lights.
In today’s article we are going to introduce you to the Glif. This is a very thoughtfully designed tripod mount and stand, and it’s available for iPhone 4, 4S, and the newest generation as well. It is currently priced at only $20.
Glif is amazingly simple piece of equipment, which is also simply brilliant at the same time. In case you’ve ever searched for a tripod mount for your iPhone, than you probably know that these are usually very bulky and many of them are combining a full-featured case into which you can screw a tripod. This can work very well in practice, but Glif will show you that things can get very simplified without sacrificing any functionality. Continue reading to see what I am talking about.
Instead of being a case which fully surrounds your phone, Glif is a type of cradle into which you place your phone. It actually holds your phone from a bottom side and one corner. This will firmly hold your phone on its place, but you should still be careful not to pull it out accidentally. As you can imagine, the Glif comes with a hole on its bottom part into which you can screw any standard tripod.
On the other hand, the Glif can be used as a stand as well. As you can see from the pictures, there’s a small bracket into which you can place your iPhone, so it can create angle of 90-degress. There are several ways to achieve this connection, and your iPhone can be placed both in its landscape and portrait orientation. It is actually very surprising how well this works, and how firm this connection can be. The only thing that’s missing is ability to use more than one viewing angle, but somewhat I think I am asking too much from a simple piece of plastic.
Finally, it may be interesting to know that the Glif started out as a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of $10,000. After the campaign ended, creators of Glif received $140,000 and started production. Right now you can buy it for $20 for its standard edition, and $30 for its “Plus” edition which brings a small additional piece which very tightly connects your phone to this stand.
