If you like following our reviews than you probably know that there are just a few Lightning-equipped iPhone docks which are truly usable. Even though docks were very popular until the iPhone 5 was introduced, ever since the Lightning technology was made available many designers and manufacturers were having a hard time creating fully usable products. One of the biggest reasons for this is that a newly released docks need to pay much higher fees for the Apple-approved Lightning plugs, so potential buyers are choosing to spend their money on some other ways.
I am still searching for the next best iPhone dock, and during my search I’ve stumbled across numerous semi-functional products. Most docks don’t offer the Lightning plug in order to reduce the price, but this leads to some other complications. The ones who do offer this technology are usually very pricey and they don’t support iPhone cases. If you continue reading this article you might find a dock that will make you think about spending some money on this kind of iOS accessory.
Gravitas, by Henge Docks, is recently introduced iPhone dock, priced at $89. This dock was first unveiled at 2013 CES which means that it took almost a year to reach the market. As you can see by its high price, this is a premium grade product which brings several highly interesting features so let’s go ahead and take a deeper look into it.
The first thing you’ll notice once you take Gravitas dock into you hand is its weight. This dock is made of a metal alloy that’s 265 percent denser than aluminum, so it weighs a little bit over 2.5 pounds. I believe this is a good thing since it really feels premium and solidly built, and this also means that you can pull your iPhone without having to push a dock down in order not to pull the whole system altogether. As you can see from the pictures, Gravitas comes with the Lightning plug, and it also offers USB-to-USB cable so you can connect it to your computer to directly to a wall outlet.
The most interesting thing about Gravitas is that it’s compatible with iPhones, iPods, and even iPads. This is because there’s recessed channel running across the middle part, where the Lightning plug is positioned. You can use one of four plastic adapters which are designed to house a certain type of iOS device. Each of these four adapters are carefully designed to complement contours of the corresponding iOS device. No matter which adapter you use, it will nicely fit into the channel and the Home button will always be accessible. The only negative side about this setup is that you won’t be able to use any cases with your iOS device, which is very disappointing. However, Henge Docks announced that additional adapters will be available which will bring compatibility with some cases.
Even though it’s high priced, Gravitas is one of the best Lightning docks that I’ve reviewed. It brings great design and it is quality made as well. It’s also important to note that it’s compatible with a wide range of iOS devices, and that it brings audio port on its back side so you can connect some audio systems.
