Microsoft Debuts Office 2024: What’s New for Mac and PC

This week, Microsoft introduced Office 2024, a standalone version of its popular productivity suite, catering to both Mac and PC users. For individuals and businesses seeking a one-time purchase option over the subscription-based Microsoft 365, Office 2024 presents an ideal solution. Available now, the new release updates essential programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook.

Unlike Microsoft 365, these applications in Office 2024 are “locked-in-time” versions, meaning they won’t receive ongoing feature updates after installation. However, they still offer a host of new features designed to improve productivity, especially for Mac users.

Key Improvements for Mac Users

Mac users will notice several performance and functionality enhancements across the suite:

  • Excel: Excel has been optimized for faster performance, particularly when managing multiple workbooks at once. This update improves efficiency for users working with large datasets and complex calculations.
  • Outlook for Mac: Customizable swipe gestures have been introduced, offering Mac users a more fluid email management experience. These gestures are designed to work seamlessly with Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse.
  • PowerPoint: PowerPoint users will benefit from two new standout features:
    • Cameo allows for embedding live camera feeds directly into slides, a useful tool for dynamic presentations.
    • Recording Studio enables users to record narration, transitions, and animations, creating more engaging presentations.
  • Word and PowerPoint: Both Word and PowerPoint now support a new commenting feature that allows users to like and react to comments in collaborative documents, streamlining feedback during teamwork.

Enhanced Inking Experience and Compatibility

In OneNote, Mac users will enjoy an improved inking experience, including a new full-screen, pen-focused view, making note-taking and drawing more intuitive. Additionally, Office 2024 now supports OpenDocument format (ODF) 1.4 across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, broadening compatibility with other software and file types.

Compatibility and Pricing

Office 2024 is fully compatible with macOS Ventura, macOS Sonoma, and the upcoming macOS Sequoia. Installation and activation require both a Microsoft account and an active internet connection. Two editions of Office 2024 are available:

  • Office Home 2024: Priced at $149.99, this edition includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
  • Office Home & Business 2024: At $249.99, this edition adds Outlook and includes commercial use rights, making it suitable for business professionals.

Both editions can be purchased directly from retailers worldwide or via the Microsoft website.

Office 2024 vs. Microsoft 365

While Office 2024 offers a robust, non-subscription alternative for users who prefer a traditional licensing model, Microsoft continues to advocate for Microsoft 365 as the better option for those seeking regular feature updates and the latest innovations. Office 2024 caters to users who prioritize stability and prefer owning software outright rather than subscribing to ongoing updates.

MacReview Verdict

Office 2024 for Mac and PC presents a solid alternative to Microsoft 365, especially for those who prefer the traditional, one-time purchase model. With notable improvements in Excel performance, enhanced customization in Outlook, and new PowerPoint features, Mac users are well-catered to. For individuals and businesses who want dependable, feature-rich software without the need for ongoing updates, Office 2024 is a highly practical choice.
